My name is Alia (They/them pronouns). I am 33 and live with my husband Richard, our Westie Pippin, and two Tabby cats, Edelgard and Thorin.

 In my art, I'm experimenting with a unique blend of traditional and modern materials. I'm using dyes and inks that I make myself from foraged items like mushrooms alongside more 'modern' materials. My art is inspired by Kyoto, Japan, where I feel a strong connection to my Dutch heritage, a bond that I hope to share with you through my art—not dissimilar to the influence of Japanese art on Van Gogh.

I am a biologist and history lover living in Athabasca, Alberta, Canada. I have a deep passion for local folklore and history. I enjoy nature hikes, birdwatching, and learning about mythology, local legends, and cryptids.

Athabasca Art Show: What should be remembered

                                    I showed my art at an art show in Athabasca on Saturday November 9th I picked inky cap mushrooms, and after 2 weeks, they fully dissolved into black ink. When picking the inky cap mushrooms, you only need the mushroom cap with the gills because the stalk does not dissolve into ink. Then, you strain the ink and boil it with cloves and have high-quality writing or painting ink. I used a recipe from a guidebook to make my ink; I want to try using other  Coprinus species to make ink, like the Shaggy Mane mushroom. I took Mom and Dalton (my brother) with me to see my art at the display I heard lots of people admiring my work, which makes me happy I explained how the ink-making worked to a few people while I was there, too ☺️ I was there for half an hour, which is about all I can manage, and it was fun!
